Polyster reflects Gen Z choice
Though the word 'Polyester' cannot be called totally unknown, it has even gained broad publicity almost around the world.
There is no marked debate about it. If not, its popularity would not have reached dizzying peaks.
According to the Gen-Z lexicon, something "polyester" is a way of saying it feels cheap, mass-produced, low-effort, or inauthentic. It might look polished at first glance, but underneath the sheen, something about it feels artificial.
By accepting it as a flawlessly clear word and providing it a whole fresh definition across social media, 'polyester' has officially entered Gen Z’s tongue, becoming a bit more surprisingly fresh way to call something frugal, generic, overly fabricated, or simply fake.
It was projected around TikTok to scorch an intensely exhaustive kind of video edit: the so-called "polyester edits", which normally featured characters like Spider-Man, with sludgy montages of rapidly glistening clips. These typically featured vibrant music and a huge dose of influences.
Now, “polyester” is being carried into free use to hurl shade at people and the way they live.
One viral TikTok featured an 18-year-old sharing his vision of his dream adult life.
The internet, however, had other reflections, with the most popular comment positively reading "polyester lifestyle" and garnering just under 50,000 likes.
According to one language trends expert, "The popularity of the viral insult ‘polyester’ echoes a more sweeping Gen Z preference for realism over glossy perfection online."
