Ukraine's peace deal moves fast
Something needful has certainly turned after a long time of as many as three years since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. What comes as a positive factor is return of peace!
A sudden, widespread obsession with cool diplomacy has followed a fresh sign that Washington saw a chance for progress, as evidenced by the sending of Steve Witkoff. He has led negotiations with Russia and Ukraine on a US peace proposal.
Zelenskyy, under pressure from President Donald Trump to accept a peace agreement that at first instance supported Moscow's demands. He also accused Russia certainly of prolonging the long conflict that caused not only killing civilians but also destroyed a lot more Ukraine's water & electricity supplies.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy's determination has long been anchored by far more expected direction that must not be underrated, of course. Nevertheless, it is an indication of something greater at this critical juncture. Taking on real diplomacy far beyond the shores of the diplomatic way.
It stands to reason that tactical diplomacy, too, appears to be catching up all the more. Perhaps the most obvious aspect of the peace agreement is that, following massive devastation, there will now rest only peace, with a modest, formal, and courteous attitude.
Zelenskyy has offered to drop Ukraine’s aspirations to join the NATO military alliance, as he held five hours of talks with US envoys in Berlin to end the war with the Russia. This has increasingly become an excuse for an abrupt end to the war. This one is obviously no exception.
He had raised his strong but firm demand for the dignified peace and guarantees that Russia would not attack Ukraine again.
Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said a lot of progress was made as he and the US president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met Zelenskyy in the latest fresh push to end Europe’s bloodiest conflict since the Second World War. It is a big relief for Ukraine.
The move marks a big shift for Ukraine, which has fought to join NATO as a normal safeguard against Russian attacks and has such an aspiration included in its very Constitution.
It also meets one of Russia’s war aims, although Kyiv has so far held firm against ceding territory to Moscow. Could it be said that there was the loss for Ukraine?
Putin wants a written pledge from leading Western powers not to enlarge the US-led NATO alliance eastwards, formally ruling out membership for Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and other former Soviet republics.
