Presently, a notable boost in textbook sales has resulted from intensive action against piracy, online sales, and the introduction of new textbooks as part of the curriculum revamp. Believe it or not, the sale of NCERT textbooks reportedly touched Rs 526 crore in 2024-25, in close comparison to Rs 232 crore in 2023-24.
The introduction of new textbooks under the National Curriculum Framework as a follow-up to NEP 2020 began rolling out across the classes this academic year. This remains a solid reason behind the spike in brisk sales, as maintained by officials.
With the updated textbooks and a spirited campaign against piracy, sales of NCERT textbooks rose by 127% in 2024–2025 to a whopping Rs 526 crore. This figure has only been achieved after a reduction in textbook prices by about 20%.
This was reportedly procured only after saving Rs 155 crore in paper procurement, upgrading to brighter paper (a minimum 85 per cent shine in 2024-25, directly compared to 82 per cent earlier), and adopting modern printing systems.
Over the last year, NCERT reportedly carried out searches at 29 locations, focusing on manufacturers and distributors of unlawfully watermarked paper and pirated textbooks. Stock and equipment worth more than Rs 20 crore were thus seized.
Enforcement actions against allegedly fake networks, book quality, and availability through e-commerce platforms are being credited with the fast growth.
To toughen anti-piracy measures, a tech-based solution developed and patented by IIT Kanpur was piloted on one million copies of a Grade 6 textbook. It has also been reported that the system showed promising outcomes.
