Lightning lash Kanpur's Jajmau

Despite the intense heat, the rain that fell in Jajmau yesterday evening is nevertheless a blessing for the distressed locals. Weather-beaten residents were immediately greatly relieved by the unexpected rainfall, even though they had been experiencing extreme heat for the last several summer days.

 

It was a sudden gathering of the clouds in the blue sky, and soon, medium to heavy drizzles started drenching everything completely. 

But the folks are a little more shaken by the roaring lightning. Precisely what we used to call a thunderstorm. It was definitely ear-searing in severity. Who can forget the long, dreadful thundering sound? 

What can be said about children, even elders, who were intensely frightened by this frightening, sharp thundering sound? 

In essence, when thunderstorms cause electrical charges within the dense cloud to separate, the lower portion of the emerging cloud usually gets negatively charged; therefore, the top portion usually becomes positively charged.

A discharge happens when there is a significant enough electrical potential difference between the dense cloud and the ground or between various areas of the cloud. We see lightning like this. 

Lightning can ensue within a cloud, or what we usually say intra-cloud, even between clouds, that is, cloud-to-cloud, or both cloud-to-ground.

Light moves at a far faster speed than sound, according to science. As a result, lightning strikes virtually & instantly, but thunder takes longer to reach people on Earth.
