Bihar bridges


Bridges in Bihar, whether they are new, old, or under construction, are drowned one by one almost every day. The state's boundaries were breached when five bridges in the districts of Siwan and Chhapra collapsed in a single day. 

A PIL has been submitted to the Supreme Court in response to these instances of bridge collapses occurring repeatedly. 

Advocate Brajesh Singh has asked the Apex Court to order a structural analysis of the state's newly built government-constructed small and large bridges by submitting a writ petition.

In addition, a request has also been made to create guidelines and a policy for compliance to guarantee an appropriate system for real-time monitoring of government construction projects, including bridges.

The petition highlights the events of two large bridge collapses and washing away, as well as other small and medium-sized bridges that were either under construction or had just been completed within the previous two years. 

According to the appeal, 68,800 square kilometres, or 73.6 per cent of the state's geographical area, are plagued by catastrophic flooding in Bihar. 

The 12 bridge collapses and washouts that have occurred in the past two years are included in the petition. In addition, six parties in all—the Bihar Government, the Highway Authority of India, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Ministry of Road Construction and Transport, and the Bridge Construction Corporation—have filed the petition.

Meanwhile, the Bihar government dismissed fifteen engineers from the departments of rural works and water resources lately for suspected incompetence, marking the first major action in response to a spate of bridge collapses that occurred within the last two weeks.

Jitan Ram Manjhi, the Union Minister, made a speech regarding the recent bridge collapses in Bihar. He stated that the monsoon is upon us. Unusual levels of rain are falling, which is causing bridges to collapse.

The state's fallen bridges are all quite old. The reason for its fall was a natural tragedy. Ten percent bridges were supposedly built with subpar materials. According to JDU's state vice president, sand mining is another significant factor in bridge collapses.
